Educators: Create a community post

Write and share posts with your community, save drafts for later, and flag urgent messages so families don't miss them.

This article covers creating a community post on the web version of Storypark. If you're using the Storypark for Educators app, see Using the Storypark for Educators app on an iPhone or iPad instead.

In this guide, learn about:

You can also learn more about your community space, community posts and urgent posts in Your community space.

Creating and sharing a community post

To find your community space, tap the Community tab.

  1. Tap Add post at the top right of the community page. The Create community post window opens.

  2. Type your message.

  3. Tap Post.

Save to in progress and Post stay greyed out until you’ve added something to the post. If you’re not ready to share it yet, you can save it and come back to it later. See saving a community post to finish later.

You can also create a community post from a room at your centre. Rooms have their own Community discussion space, which works the same way as the early childhood service's community space. To create a community post from a room's community space, the educator first needs to be in the room. If they aren't, an admin educator will need to add them before they can create a community post in the room.

Alternatively, to quickly create a community post tap + Create in the blue menu bar at the top of any page, then choose the community post option.

If you're connected to multiple services and want to post to a specific service or room, create it from the Community page within that service or room.

Messaging your community about an upcoming event or a reminder? Include the date so family members can add it straight to their personal calendars from the app. Find out more about the calendar feature for families.

Adding photos, video and files

The image, video and attachment icons sit just below the text field. Add what you need before you post. Your files appear as thumbnails underneath, each with a small cross if you want to remove one.

Read Add files to a community post to learn more.

Saving a community post to finish later

Sometimes you start a post and can't finish it. You can save a community post as a draft and come back to it whenever suits you to continue editing and/or publish.

Save your post

While you're writing, tap Save to In progress instead of Post. This saves your post as a draft without publishing it.

Your post is saved. Nothing is shared with families while it is a draft.

Find your saved posts

At the top of the community page, tap In progress.

Your saved posts appear as cards, each showing the start of the post, who added it, and any photos attached.

In progress shows saved posts from everyone at your service, not just your own. To narrow it to yours, tap Filter and choose Authored by me.

Who can see a post that's in progress?

Educators at your service can see in-progress posts. Families can't see them at all until you share them.

To check who that is, tap the eye icon at the top right of the In progress tab, next to the sort control.

Because your team can see them, a colleague can pick up a post you started, finish it and share it. This helps when you're rostered off, and a message still needs to go out.

Posts in progress aren’t private: any educator at your service can see them. Nobody is notified when you save one, and it won’t appear in anyone’s activity feed. If you’re jotting something down that isn’t meant for the team to read, a child note or a conversation may suit better.

Share your post when it's ready

  1. Tap In progress at the top of the community page.

  2. Tap the post you want to finish. It opens straight away, ready to edit.

  3. Make your changes, then tap Post.

In a post that’s already in progress, the middle button reads Save instead of Post to in progress, since it’s already saved. Tapping Save keeps your changes and leaves the post where it is.

Once shared, your post:

  • moves out of In progress and appears under Posts

  • becomes visible to everyone in your community

  • sends the usual notifications to families and educators, exactly as it would if you'd written and shared it in one go

How long a post sits in progress doesn't affect what families receive: they get the same notification either way, when you share it.

Making an urgent community post

Admin educators can mark community posts as urgent.

While writing your post, tick Mark as urgent on the right, below the text field.

Admin family members will receive an email and their usual Storypark notification, even if they've turned off community post emails in their notification settings.

Marking a post urgent overrides a family member's notification settings, so save it for genuinely urgent or time-sensitive announcements.

Writing tools in community posts

Storypark Assist adds writing tools to your community posts, including spelling and grammar checks, translation, and tone changes.

If you have writing tools, you'll find them behind the A icon at the top right of the text field.

Storypark Assist is an add-on that brings writing tools to your service. Trial it for free: an admin educator can add it through your account page if you're at an independent service, or by contacting your Account Manager if you're part of a multi-site network. Some independent services in Australia already include these tools, with no extra step needed.

Spelling and grammar

Tap the A icon and choose the spelling and grammar option. Suggestions appear highlighted in your text, with Accept or Discard above them.

Translation support

Tap the A icon and choose Translation. Select the language you'd like your message translated into.

The translation appears highlighted the same way, with Accept and Reject, so you can read it over before it replaces anything.

Change the tone of your message

Choose a tone that suits your post. Tap the A icon, then choose Change tone.

Voice-to-text (Early Access)

If your service has Early Access and Storypark Assist, you can dictate your community post instead of typing it.

  1. Tap the mic button in the text field.

  2. Speak your message. The transcript appears as editable text while you talk.

  3. Tap the mic button again to stop, then edit the text if you need to.

Voice-to-text is in Early Access and needs both Early Access and Storypark Assist turned on for your service. Join Early Access to get access to new features earlier. Read more in Educators: Voice-to-text.
