What is a portfolio story?
Portfolio stories allow educators to reflect and document evidence of their work over time. Whether it's a reflection on your goals or inquiry, or a record of your professional learning development - portfolio stories can have a multitude of uses.
You can add your learning tags (ie. teaching or graduate standards, or other assessment criteria that may be relevant to you as a teacher), to your portfolio stories. One of the benefits is that over time you can analyse and review your progress against these criteria.
How to create a portfolio story
There are two ways to create portfolio stories: adding a story you've already published to a child's profile, to your portfolio with one click, or creating a story from scratch in your own portfolio.
Portfolio stories can be created in the same way as other stories, i.e. add text, images, videos and PDFs, but instead of selecting a child in the story, an educator selects themselves.
Adding a published child story to your portfolio
On each story you've authored and published, you'll see an Add to My Portfolio button:
Clicking this adds a copy of the story to your portfolio and displays a message confirming that. You'll get the option to close the message and stay viewing the current story, or to Open in My Portfolio:
Opening it in your portfolio allows you to view, edit or respond to your new portfolio story. You might want to:
Add context or additional reflections
Relate it to a goal you've set
Apply portfolio learning tags, eg. teaching standards
Remove children's names and personal details so it does not personally identify any child (see the Child Privacy with Educator Portfolios article)
Creating a portfolio story from scratch
1. Tap the Create story button
Note: If you're creating the story from your portfolio, you will already be selected and won't need to follow any of the following steps.
2. Tap the group selector where you usually select your service or room name, and choose My Portfolio:
3. Once you have selected My Portfolio, you will be shown as an educator in the story:
4. When you're finished writing your portfolio story, tap Publish and the story will be saved to your portfolio stories page:
Who can see portfolio stories?
When you publish a portfolio story it will be saved to your portfolio, and at first can only be seen by yourself.
When only you have access to a portfolio story, you'll see a lock icon at the bottom:
A portfolio story can be made visible to your contributors by clicking the arrow in the top right of the story preview card and selecting which of your contributors you'd like to give access to. Once a contributor is selected, they can view and respond to your story.
What can I access if I leave my service?
Your portfolio stories will remain accessible to you even after you've left your current early learning service.
Linking portfolio stories
If your service has subscribed to the Premium version of Eductor Portfolios - you can link your published portfolio stories together in a plan in order to show progression or evidence of your learning journey. Learn more about linking portfolio stories to plans.
