What is voice-to-text?
When writing a story, community post, child note, or response, or using Storypark Assist, you’ll see a microphone button. Tapping the microphone button starts voice-to-text. Speak naturally, and a transcription appears as editable text. You review and edit as needed before saving. Audio is processed on the fly and never stored. Only the text you confirm is kept.
Why use voice-to-text?
Voice-to-text can be helpful if you prefer to dictate or find typing slower than speaking.
How to use voice-to-text
The first time you use voice-to-text, allow microphone access when prompted.
Finding the mic button
If your service has Storypark Assist, when you create a story, child note, community post, or response, or use Storypark Assist, in a web browser, you'll find a mic button to dictate with.
Voice-to-text requires Storypark Assist to be enabled for your centre. If it's not available, ask an admin educator to enable it from your account page or talk to your account manager.
Recording and transcribing
1. Tap the mic button. A red indicator shows it’s listening and ready to transcribe. On your first use, allow microphone access when prompted.
2. Speak naturally. You can pause between sentences; the transcript updates in real time as you talk.
3. When you're done, tap the mic button again to stop recording.
The transcript appears in the text field as editable text. You can still review and make any corrections before saving or publishing
Editing the transcript
You can edit the text exactly like any other text in Storypark:
Move your cursor anywhere and keep dictating from that spot. This will enter any new transcribed text where your cursor is.
Highlight text and speak to replace it.
Delete, add, or rearrange words using the keyboard.
E.g. if the transcript says 'The children were exploring the water tray' but you meant 'water table', just highlight 'tray' and say 'table'. The transcript is editable, not final, and will enter the text wherever your cursor is.
If you accidentally replaced text you wanted to keep, use the undo button to restore the previous text.
What voice-to-text does and doesn't do
Voice-to-text:
Transcribes what you say into editable text
Works on any device with an internet connection and within a web browser
Lets you speak and review before saving anything
Allows an educator to control when the mic is on
Voice-to-text does not:
Store audio. It processes your voice in real time and then discards it. Nothing is replayable or attached to your note or story.
Generate content on its own. It transcribes what you say; it doesn't make inferences, add observations, or create text without you speaking.
Auto-publish. The transcript lands as editable text. You review it, make any changes, and confirm before anything is saved or shared.
Work offline. You need an internet connection for real-time transcription.
Availability
Voice-to-text is part of the Storypark Assist add-on. It's available to any service with an active Assist subscription, at no extra cost.
If you don't have Storypark Assist, you won't see the mic button.
An admin educator can add Storypark Assist through your account page or by contacting your Account Manager. For more details, check out Storypark Assist.
Troubleshooting
The mic button isn't showing
Check that Storypark Assist is added to your subscription. If you do and the button still isn't there, refresh the page or clear your browser cache.
The transcription is inaccurate or didn't start
Make sure you have a stable internet connection. Voice-to-text requires real-time processing, so a slow or unreliable connection can affect quality.
If you're in a noisy environment, the transcription may pick up background noise. Try moving to a quieter space if possible.
The mic button disappeared mid-recording
If you lose your internet connection while recording, the button will stop responding. Check your connection and try again.
